Looking out over the valley

Looking out over the valley, by Joshua Owens (12/01/2012)

Autumn ended
Leaf is down
On my soul
Wrought this frown

Bird and flower
Sing no more
Dormant lies
The Forest Floor

Trail Sign

Trail Sign, by Joshua Owens (12/01/2012)

Cove, fantastic,
Smooth and high
Pushes tree
Against the sky

In dark gorge
A signpost bright
Shows me to
The winter light

An early December ramble through north Georgia’s Cohutta Wilderness Area takes a hiker into a solemn forest of muted color and sound. The experience imparts a pleasant melancholy suited to reflection about beginnings and endings. From the rim of Cowpen Mountain, with hardwood trees stark against the sky, Panther Creek Trail leads a hiker down a dark chasm of rhododendron and hemlock. The trail descends deep into the gorge, only to abruptly end at the sparkling brightness of the splashing Conasauga River. This junction where darkness ends is marked by a dead tree made brilliant by hundreds of white shelf fungi. Photo by Daniel Roper.
